The electrics in Pudsey houses

Pudsey's housing is mostly stone-built: through terraces and back-to-backs around the town centre and Lowtown, interwar semis spreading out towards Tyersal and Fulneck, and pockets of newer estate housing. Each brings its own electrical quirks.

The stone terraces are the ones I am called to most. Solid walls mean surface-mounted or heavily chased cable, lighting circuits with no earth are common, and consumer units are often tucked in a cellar head or under the stairs where damp is a factor. The 1930s semis frequently still have their original circuit layout with nowhere near enough sockets, which is why extra sockets and a board upgrade so often get done together.

What I get called out for locally

• Fuse board upgrades in terraces that have never had RCD protection
• EICRs for the large number of LS28 properties that are let
• Fault finding on outside lights and garage supplies after heavy rain
• Power to garages and garden offices on the longer plots
• EV chargers, increasingly, on the newer estates

Being local genuinely matters for the small jobs. A single socket is not worth a long journey for anyone, which is why so many people end up living with them — if you are in Pudsey, ring about it.
